—To educate parents about escalating prescription drug abuse, Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) will host an information night to help parents identify the signs of drug use and abuse.
“One in four teenagers report having misused or abused a prescription drug in their lifetime,” Stephens said. “That’s a 33 percent increase from 2008 to 2012. Even more concerning is that four in 10 of those teenagers obtained the drugs from their parents’ medicine cabinet. It is critical parents learn all they can to protect their children. Furthermore, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health found 81 percent of heroin abusers have previously abused prescription drugs, illustrating how prescription drug abuse is a gateway to more illicit drug use.”
The event will take place Monday, April 21st, at 7 p.m., at the Horsham Township Community Center, located at 1025 Horsham Road in Horsham
. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office as well as a forensic toxicologist from NMS Labs will be there to alert parents about increased prescription drug abuse in the community. Topics discussed will include prescription drug abuse trends, preventative measures for families to take to stop prescription drug abuse, and dangerous health implications for those who begin abusing prescription drugs.
