Murt, Stephens to Unveil Walls Memorial Highway on Sunday
4/14/2016
HARRISBURG—Reps. Thomas Murt (R-Montgomery/Philadelphia) and Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) will host a road dedication to honor a local veteran who gave his life serving in Vietnam.

On Sunday, April 17, at 1 p.m., Murt and Stephens will unveil a new sign designating the portion of Blair Mill Road between Horsham and Moreland roads in honor of Pvt. William Walls of Horsham.

The ceremony will take place at the Blair Mill Elementary School, 109 Bender Road in Horsham.

Walls served as a combat engineer in the Marine Corps for two years during the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Walls died on Jan. 24, 1966, in Quang Nam, South Vietnam. He is buried at the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Gettysburg.

“During the divisive 1960s and 1970s, our community was like many others across America,” Murt said. “As the war in Vietnam raged, people were divided over our involvement. Because of that personal conflict, we failed to honor our Vietnam veterans. It’s critical that we recognize that sacrifice.”

“After more than four decades, we are recognizing the service and ultimate sacrifice of a Horsham man who was dedicated to his family, his community and his country,” Stephens said. “That portion of Blair Mill Road will honor this extraordinary sacrifice and stand as a memorial to all the men from our community who paid the ultimate price in defending their country.”
