HARRISBURG— Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) today announced that Mako-Medical has agreed to provide COVID-19 test results to Montgomery County within 36 hours. Currently results are taking up to 14 days.

Earlier this month Stephens announced he was working with The Physicians Integrated Network (TPIN), an organization of 750 physician specialists serving 1.6 million patients in the Delaware Valley, to reduce the time it takes to receive test results.

“A constituent received her results 14 days after testing, rendering those results completely worthless. Having results within 36 hours will help keep our families safe by reducing community spread of this contagious disease,” Stephens said.

The Physicians Integrated Network is a clinically integrated network located in Southeastern Pennsylvania. TPIN physicians comprise 54 practices and 200 offices and interact with 1.6 million patients in the region. TPIN represents the physicians as medicine transitions from providing episodic care to a more comprehensive delivery system where the emphasis is on keeping patients healthy.

By being a clinically integrated network, the physicians can work with government agencies, commercial insurers and hospitals to keep communities healthy.

TPIN, through a partnership with Mako-Medical based in North Carolina, has been afforded the opportunity to expand COVID testing in the region. Mako-Medical is providing testing in at least eight other states.

“Expanded and timely testing will help our public health officials monitor local infection rates and prevent further outbreaks by notifying infectious patients and getting them to self-quarantine. Patients who are now quarantining for up to a week will resume their normal activities without fear of contaminating their peers,” said Dr. Scott Shapiro, MD, Chief Strategic Officer of TPIN.

“Fast, accurate COVID-19 test results are essential to protecting our health,” Stephens said. “I applaud Montgomery County, TPIN and Mako-Medical for taking this important step toward protecting our families.”

Mako-Medical has signed an agreement with Montgomery County to test COVID-19 specimens, which are flown by private plane to North Carolina with a less than 36-hour turnaround time. That turnaround time is a contractual obligation written into the agreement.

Mako-Medical will be calling the county with daily positive results, and a spreadsheet will be sent to the county with all results. The company will also notify patients when their results are completed via text message to limit phone calls and work for the county.

Also, specimen collection kits will be provided to the county every Monday at 9 a.m. to assure enough supplies.

“Montgomery County should be indebted to the efforts of Commissioner Arkoosh, Dr. Alvin Wang and Rep. Stephens. Today’s partnership between Mako-Medical and Montgomery County would not have happened without their guidance, support and insight into the needs of their community. These individuals put any politics aside and acted to improve the care of our community,” said Shapiro.
